Braveheart - helping people with heart problems |
|
Braveheart is a self help programme running in the Falkirk and Clackmannanshire Districts of Forth Valley, Scotland. On the 29th August 2007 the Big Lottery announcd that the Braveheart Association were being awarded £119,751 to enable the project to expand into Clackmananshire - the area with the highest incidence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in Forth Valley. This funding along with pledged funds from the Robertson Trust will enable the project to employ a Development Officer to recruit & train volunteer health mentors to run self help groups for adults of all ages with heart problems living in the Clackmannshire area. Falkirk & Clacks will now be able to offer the same support to adults who have heart problems.
What do we do? Adults who have heart problems are allocated to a self help group which meets once every three weeks for two hours over the period of one year. The groups are lead by two health mentors who provide information sessions and encouragement to small groups of between 8 - 12 people.
At Braveheart meetings, group members are given the opportunity to discuss issues such as heart health, medication, healthy eating, physical activity, cholesterol, stress/relaxation, smoking, benefits and self management. Groups also allow participants to share their own life experiences and consider new ideas on how to live life to the full. |
